Title: “Shella Dancer”
Artist: MM
Medium: Sea shell, sea glass, and ink on canvas
Provenance: Created at Camp Freedom using materials gathered along the shores of Sandy Hook. Inspired by the rhythm of ocean waves and the spirit of joy in simple things.
Collection: Camp Freedom Community Commissions
Description:
Poised mid-twirl, this joyful island dancer is composed of a soft beach pebble for the head, a shell skirt fanned like a sunbeam, and a crown of sea glass that forms a vibrant green lei. Her limbs and movement are suggested by simple, playful black linework—arms swaying, feet ready to step to a rhythm only she hears.
The clean white canvas allows the natural textures and colors of the beachcombed materials to shine. Minimalist yet full of personality, this piece invites viewers to hear waves, feel sand, and let loose in the spirit of the dance.
Artist Note:
Found on the shores of Sandy Hook and given new life through joy and gesture, this tiny dancer reminds us to celebrate the present moment. Created at Camp Freedom with gratitude for what the sea brings in.
