Title: “Reel Joy”
Artist: Eric Kane
Medium: Driftwood, acrylic paint, fishing lure, and repurposed canvas
Provenance: Composed at Camp Freedom with driftwood collected from the Jersey Shore and a salvaged fishing lure. Inspired by quiet moments on the dock and the playful tension of waiting for a bite.
Collection: Camp Freedom Community Commissions
Description:
A playful figure crafted from hand-collected driftwood kneels on a dock, casting a pole toward a real fishing lure that arcs off the edge of the canvas. The pink lure, accented with a painted eye and white streak, dangles joyfully—blurring the line between found object and art.
Set against a vivid magenta-to-purple gradient sky, the piece evokes the quiet joy of casting out into unknown waters, where imagination bites as often as fish. The dock is built from bleached twigs, the water is hinted at with simple white strokes, and the tension of the “catch” is humorously dramatized by the lure hanging just off the canvas’s edge.
Artist Note:
